From Global Learning to Local Action: How International Fellowships Are Strengthening Alphome Community Farms

From the United States to community forests in the Democratic Republic of Congo, global experiences are helping shape local solutions for agriculture, conservation, and resilience.

Introduction: Why Global Learning Matters

Alphome Community Farms believes sustainable community transformation requires both local action and global learning. Over the past two years, our Founder and Executive Director, Safari Bahati Jean-Jacques, participated in two major international leadership programs that continue to strengthen our work in agriculture, agroforestry, conservation, and community resilience in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These experiences provided exposure, mentorship, and practical approaches that are now informing our programs and long-term vision.

1. Community Engagement Exchange Program (2024)

Community Engagement Exchange (CEE): Leadership Beyond Borders

In 2024, Safari Bahati Jean-Jacques participated in the Community Engagement Exchange Program, a U.S. Department of State initiative supporting emerging community leaders from around the world.

The fellowship created opportunities to engage with global practitioners, strengthen leadership skills, and exchange experiences with changemakers addressing challenges in their communities.

The experience reinforced the importance of community ownership, systems thinking, and partnerships as foundations for sustainable development.

2. Practicum Experience with Global Growers Network

Learning from Global Growers Network in Atlanta, USA

As part of the CEE program, Safari completed a practicum with Global Growers Network in Atlanta, Georgia.

This hands-on experience provided practical exposure to:

• Farmer registration systems

• Land access models

• Community farming coordination

• Sustainable agriculture approaches

• Community-based empowerment models

Many of these lessons now inform Alphome Community Farms initiatives, including farmer organization strategies and community-centered agricultural systems.

3. Conservation and Communities Fellowship (2025)

Advancing Community-Led Conservation Through the CCF Fellowship

In May 2026, Safari successfully completed the Conservation and Communities Fellowship organized by the Global Diversity Foundation.

The fellowship brought together conservation practitioners and community leaders committed to strengthening locally driven environmental solutions.

The experience expanded understanding of:

• Community-centered conservation

• Leadership and mentorship

• Environmental justice

• Collaborative learning across regions

The fellowship reinforced Alphome Community Farms' growing commitment to linking environmental protection with livelihood development.
